2010 Season Summary

Player of the Season: Sam Ansell

Sam’s batting this season has at times been thrilling to watch. In several games, the authority and dominance of his batting has completely taken the game away from the opposition and effectively decided the outcome of the match. Sam also kept wicket very capably in three matches and has taken useful wickets with his bowling. Last and certainly not least, Sam has also shouldered the responsibility of being Captain – not an easy job with a group of eleven to thirteen year-old boys, for whom concentration is not always their strong point! Crucially, Sam obviously had the respect of his team.

Most Improved Player: Noah Greenwood

Noah has been a revelation this season, indeed he was a strong challenger for Player of the Season. Noah’s batting technique may lack the class of others but it is simple and effective. His aggregate runs for the season tells the story and includes a remarkable run of four innings in succession without being dismissed. Noah is also a reliable and effective bowler, taking important wickets. His all-round contribution to the team this season has been huge and a massive step up from the previous season.

Team Player of the Season: Charles Wilson

Throughout the season Charles has continually demonstrated his enthusiasm and love of Cricket. Charles is always the player most obviously encouraging his team mates, whilst at the same time showing respect and appreciation to the opposition. Charles is also a very elegant opening batsman and a thoughtful bowler, capable of bowling either seam or spin as the situation demands. His sportsmanship is an example to all, typified by his actions in the Nonington match.

Comments:
This was a very tricky up-and-down wicket, making batting very difficult.
Match reduced to 16 overs per side as the Hawkinge groundsman needed to get the pitch prepared for a mens’ match.
For this match we introduced two new awards – a Man-of-the-match award and a Team Player award to go to another player who also made a significant contribution to the game. Man-of-the-match went to Sam for a blistering innings on a tricky pitch (including one huge six) which effectively took the game away from Hawkinge. The Team Player award went to Charles Wilson not only for his own fine innings but for two excellent slip catches and a further great stop in the slips which certainly prevented a four.

Comments:
A very sporting game played in a great spirit from both teams.
Debuts for Max and Marcus Fisher.
Man-of-the-match went to Noah for a fine all-round performance. The Team Player award went to Charles Wilson again, who very sportingly pointed out to the umpire that he had wrongly given a Nonington player out caught off his boot, thus allowing the umpire to call the batsman back. The Nonington coach commented on how gratifying it was to see this kind of sportsmanship in this age group.

Man-of-the-match – Harry Wren
Comments:
Worst performance of the season – although Sandwich were excellent.
Several players were unavailable (including opening bowler Bradley Wake-Smith) – so Harry Wren stepped up from the U11s.
Man-of-the-match went to Harry for being the Sibton top scorer. No Team Player award this time as the performance was so dire.

Comments:
Another close game until Elham lost wickets towards the end.
