Deepest Condolences

Yesterday we learned of the sad passing of former player Eddie Moss,

Eddie was born in Skelmersdale In October 1939, He joined Everton on leaving school, being released he joined his local club, making his debut at the age of 16 in March 1957 at Droylsden, scoring in a 3-2 win, making him one of United’s youngest ever scorers. Eddie was also part of the United side that played the last ever game at The Sandy Lane Ground.

In October 1958, United were up against Burscough and the Advertiser reported “There was a big disappointment for the 1,458 crowd when it was realized that young inside left Eddie Moss was conspicuously absent. The rumours were right Moss had suddenly left the White Moss fold for the bright lights of league football at Anfield”.
He represented Lancashire schoolboys and Liverpool County FA before moving to Liverpool, for a fee reportedly for £500, a regular in the Central League side but did not progress to the First team.

Eddie signed for Football League side Southport in July 1959 Eddie, playing at inside-right, was top goal scorer in his first season at Haig Avenue with twelve goals in thirty-nine League games. The following season he had fewer opportunities but he made a further 15 League appearances scoring 3 goals.

It was at Runcorn that Eddie made his mark Moving to the Linnets in January 1961, Eddie stayed until 1969, Scoring 130 goals in over 400 games. Many would claim he was the best footballer ever to play for the club.

Eddie had a short spell at Kirby Town in 1970 before returning to United in 1972, making a number of appearances before retiring in 1975.

He was an all round-sportsman playing Cricket for Skelmersdale for over 30 years, Also a very well-respected player throughout the Southport Cricket League.
Eddie was a frequent visitor to Stormy Corner and was watching United back in March before the lockdown.
