Swindon made the long journey south to arrive at Test Park to play the Solent Spitfires. With both squad depleted due to holidays and injuries the teams decided on a 7s format of four 15 minute periods. With such a large pitch and such talent on display the massive crowd were not to be disappointed.
The Spitfires struck first with Chad Marshall hitting a great line off half back Tyreman to break free and score on the Spitfires first possession. Swindon then settled into the game and scored some nice try's of their own with the golden shorts players proving to be a handful for the Solent defence close to their own line. The first half close but the spitfires just edged it scoring 9 try's to Swindon's 4.
Coach Tyreman set the half time targets to slow the play the ball down, work harder in defence and keep the attacking plays simple. The targets were all met and the Spitfires went on to score 10 more try's in the second half.
Jason York crossed for two out wide with excellent finishing. Second rower Stokes hard running was rewarded with a hat-trick. Hooker Nick Cazeaux's support play was rewarded with a brace of try's. Chris Kilby crossed for one try with excellent support play. Chad Marshall who showed his former rugby league experience crossed five times and finally John Cole crossed for 6 try's ranging from excellent running, support play and been on the receiving end of excellent handling out wide.
Half back Tyreman was the only Spitfire not to cross the try line but had a hand in the creation of lots of the teams try's.
In the end the Spitfires outscored the Dragon by 19 - 7 but as in all masters games the official score is 0-0.
Head Coach Tyreman was happy with the performance and felt the Spitfires defence helped lay the platform for the win. In particular forwards Kilby and Stokes stood out for their effort in defence and their ability to hit and stick in the tackle was a key factor in controlling the speed of the ruck and not letting Swindon have quick play the balls.
