Saints duke it out, but come a close second...

Andy Harris25 Nov 2024 - 17:45

The Saints endured a third loss in November but gave an excellent performance.

Despite ending the month with a third consecutive defeat, Saints put in one of their best performances on Saturday to restore some pride following a tough few weeks.

In atrocious conditions, the visitors edged a contest that was toe to toe throughout with both sides battling the elements.

Head Coach Jack Stevenson commented post match:

"My feeling on this afternoon was one of frustration and disappointment that we didn't get the win when we had the opportunity, however, this was a vastly improved performance on the previous two weeks.

I was pleased to have come away with at least two points and the defensive display was us back to our best. As a team, our decision making at important moments was a lot better.

Big credit to Luke (Sicheri-Peel) on starting his first game in the front row against one of the best packs in the league. The attitude shown by Luke to step up was exceptional and infectious with other players like Lewis (Dempsey) also willing to do the same.

We have a two week break now to take stock and prepare for two huge fixtures in Barnet (away) and Tabard (home) before the Christmas break".

Following two heavy defeats against Hampstead and Harrow and playing against a Saracens side that had beaten both of those teams already this season, the supporters on the terrace could be forgiven for feeling apprehensive ahead of kick off. Nerves were soon settled, however, as Saints made a strong start to the game, and although it was Saracens who got the opening try, Saints responded quickly with back row Fraser Morris crashing over from close range.

Saracens had the advantage in the scrum throughout the game with their superior pack, but in the loose it was an even back and forth. Both teams were reduced to 14 players for a 10 minute period either side of the half and Saracens went in at the break seven points in front. Saints took the lead through Will Batchelor driving over before Saracens got their second try and converted to go ahead once more and a penalty just before the break.

Early in the second 40, Saracens extended the advantage to twelve before Saints came back. Two scores from hooker Jack Dempsey, the first a drive close to the line, the second a sything run that cut through the visiting defense finished a brilliant piece of team play from a lineout. Saints worked the phases to get into the Saracens 22. Co-captain Osian Rees carried and tipped to Dempsey who was running a support line at pace, breaking the first tackle and rounding the last defender to slide over under the sticks. Extras added by Owen Hagues to level the scoreboard with a few minutes to go.

It was Saracens who would have the last say and scored the winning try. Saints had one more opportunity but the ball was loose and cleared out of play by the visitors to the sound of the referees whistle.
