Stanningley Under 11's win their first tournament at Woodkirk 2010

Stanningley Under 11's 2009/2010 won their first tournament at a very wet Woodkirk Valley this morning. Albion had two teams in the tournament with the A team going through the group phases unbeaten, featuring one debutant and an under 10 player, with the B team losing once narrowly after an unkind deflection. As the tournament wore on, both teams grew in confidence and played some good football. Unfortunately both teams met in the semi final and there was little to choose between them after they finished normal time at 2-2. There was to be no further score in extra time though, despite some excellent play from both teams and the game went to the inevitable penalty shoot out, let's hope we don't have any of those during the world cup! The B's narrowly edged the A's after a missed pen was retaken for reasons better known to the referee - so sadly one team couldn't make the final. Stanningley faced Tingley Tigers in the final, who we met in the league last season and who were one of only three teams to inflict defeat on the red and blacks. This time it was Stanningley who took the spoils. The first half finished goal less and it was all to play for, though Albion appeared to have the edge. As ever in these mini tournaments, the team that scores first seizes the momentum and Albion scored one, then quickly got a fortuitous second after an unlucky own goal. The lads finished off the afternoon in style with another three goals, to win the game 5-0. Thanks to all the other sides participating for making it a good day of competitive football.
