REDRUTH 55 – 14 ST. AUSTELL
By Bill Hooper at the Recreation Ground.
Redruth completed their pre-season with another win but were made to work hard, especially during the first half by their Western Counties West opponents.
Coached this season by former Redruth & Cornwall No.8 Kyle Marriott, the Saints tested the Reds during the opening forty deservedly reaching half-time 14-12 up.
Redruth got off to a promising start when centre Connor Gilbert cantered in off an Adam Hosking pass for the opening try bettered by fly-half Will Whitworth.
It was St. Austell’s turn to apply the pressure for long periods playing down the slope testing the Redruth defence. Both centre Shane Johns and winger Cav Boyer went close before prop Hugh Noot powered over from close range with Boyer’s conversion levelling the scores.
From set-play Redruth served up a second try scored by second row Todd Prisk with Hosking again involved with the scoring pass.
St. Austell continued to threaten, a fine burst from flanker Andy Inch led to the build up of centre George Tregilgas’ try with Boyer once more adding the extras.
Second half Redruth made several changes to the backline but it was flanker Sam Stevens who got the first of their seven tries scored during the second forty.
Redruth’s greater fitness and technique began to tell as they ran in further tries through flanker Aden Brassington, a brace from fly-half Richie Kevern, lock Luke Hattam, full back Aaron Simmonds and finally centre Jack Simmons, Kevern kicked four second half conversions to complete the scoring.
Three pre-season wins is always good for confidence but as the coaching staff know only too well the acid test comes next Saturday with the first league game at Dings at their new ground.
Forwards coach Gareth Tedstone was pleased with the run-out and the test posed by St. Austell. “Both sides took a lot from that game, our defence was given a stern test during the first half and came through well.
“We will build for our first league game next Saturday up at Dings on their artificial pitch which will be a first for many of our lads. We have some interesting selections to make ahead of the game with many of the lads putting their hands up for selection.”
Redruth scores: Tries, Gilbert, Prisk, Stevens, Brassington, Kevern (2), Hattam, Simmonds, Simmons, Cons, Whitworth, Kevern (4).
St. Austell scores: Tries, Noot, Tregilgas, Cons, Boyer (2).
