St Austell 33-9 Liskeard/Looe Sat 12th September 2009 Match report by Jack Rowe
St Austell maintained a 100% league record with a convincing victory over local rivals Liskeard/Looe at a sun drenched Tregorrick Park.
Saints were quick out of the blocks with winger Mishak Esien surprising Liskeard/Looe with his pace, to score twice in the first ten minutes of his first team debut. For his first try Mishak received the ball near half way and disappeared into the midst of the Liskeard/Looe pack and somehow appeared again on the other side with the ball neatly tucked under his arm leaving only the full back to beat, which he did with ease and with centre Andy Ashwin converting, Saints were 7-0 up after only 5 minutes.
Esien scored again soon after when full back Ian Venner ran back a kick leaving the new winger in space to race down the line to score in the corner. With the St Austell backs cutting loose at every opportunity and the forwards giving them plenty of possession, more scores seemed imminent but it was Liskeard/Looe who scored next when Saints were penalised in front of their posts and fly half Marcus Hill kicked a penalty for 12-3.
On the half hour Saints increased their lead with their 3rd try after a break from centre Kieran Murphy sent full back Venner over in the corner and centre Ashwin missed the difficult conversion but kicked a penalty for 20-3 lead.
Liskeard/Looe didn't look like scoring a try but did manage to kick two more penalties before half time to make it 20-9. Again Saints dominated the 2nd half but for all their dominance only scored one try. From a quick penalty hooker Joe Hughes broke through the first line of defence and unselfishly gave the scoring pass for scrum half Matt Shepherd to dot down under the posts . Ashwin converted and kicked two penalties to round off a day of entertaining running rugby.
Saints second string also continued their 100% record by beating Liskeard/Looe seconds 20-15.
