Saints ended their first season in the Devon and Cornwall league in third place, just missing out on a promotion place, but can be very happy with their season. Coach Richard Lamb in his final game before standing down to spend more time with his family reflected that St Austell can be very proud of their performances this season and with the team being a young one look forward to chasing for promotion next season. Forwards coach Milo Bright will be head coach next year assisted by backs' coaches James Earp and Nigel Allen with Steve Murley stepping up from the colts to take the post director of rugby.
Although Saints won without getting into top gear there were some fine individual performances with the ever improving Matt Shepherd at scrum half scoring a first half hat-trick and adding a fourth in the second half and young colt Tom Miles on his first team debut making the most of his opportunity to score two well taken tries and with skipper Adam Kellow grabbing a brace and a fine try by full back Ian Venner, Saints(who were 27-0 up at half time) never looked in trouble, however Oaks never gave up and put in some bone crunching tackles in midfield and deserved to get on the scoreboard with a penalty mid way through the second half. The final score was Oaks 3 Saints 51.
Next Saturday 1st May sees London Wasps ladies playing St Austell ladies at Tregorrick Park with an 11am kickoff and there will also be a series of small side games with ladies combined sides. The Chairmans versus Presidents game has been revamped to an U23 v O23 with an even mix of first team players on either side playing for bragging rights with a 3.30kickoff, after the match Saints are holding their presentation evening with a Casino night, disco and buffet.
