Saints bowed out in the semi final of the Cornwall Clubs Cup by a six point margin over the two legs. Both legs of the semi final were fiercely contested and with the weather being wet and muddy, the pitch better suited Saltash's forward orientated game. Although Saints tried to run the ball (both their wingers scored tries), all too often the ball was lost forward in slippery conditions.
Saints with young scrum half Matt Shepherd making his first team debut, started well and took the lead after 5 minutes. A loose kick out of defence was fielded by full back Tate Richardson who threw a long pass to winger Paul Read just inside the Saltash half, Read went outside the first defenders and then ran down the touchline to score in the corner and put St Austell 5-0 up.
St Austell failed to capitalise on their early score and although they kicked well into the corners early on, Saltash won the ball and mauled it upfield and during the last ten minutes of the half St Austell had to defend their line and in doing so gave away a penalty for offside which fly half Will Virgo converted to make the half time score 5-3.
Once again Saints started the half well when almost from the kick off flanker Rob Jeffs broke down the wing and passed inside before the ball came to winger Craig Taylor who went over in the corner for a 10-3 lead.
For some reason Saints relaxed and instead of finishing Saltash off allowed them back into the game by giving away a series of penalties. From one such close to the line, Saltash flanker Julian Oaks took a quick penalty to dive under the posts and when Virgo converted it was 10 apiece.
Both sides could have won the game but when Saltash stole a Saints lineout with 10 minutes to go, the ball was spread wide to replacement winger Robert Allen who outpaced the defence to score in the corner and when Virgo again converted Saints were 17-10 down. St Austell went for a try that would take them into the final but the Saltash defence held firm. Man of the match for Saints was Matt Shepherd.
