Twelve tries ten conversions and one penalty but dont be fooled by the score it took 30 minutes for St Austell to break into their stride. The only difference between the two sides at this point was a sole Ashwin penalty. After this, the final ten minutes of the first half was a frenzy of Red and White activity with four converted tries, Rob Jeffs running from deep inside the home half was stopped inches short of the Torrington line and offloaded for Phil Giles to score, Alex Welland then showed the turn of pace that is going to be talked about long into the season with two succesive tries and Ian Venner added the fourth, Ashwin converted all four and the Saints were 31-0 at half time.
Saints started the second half in the same manner with a great run from St Austells Venner being thwarted on the try line, from the resulting scrum back row Paul Winterbottom burst over the line and minutes later back row Rob Jeffs did exactly the same.
Plucky Torrington then started to put a few moves together working their way into the St Austell half, penalty chances were used wisely and they scored from a maul after a well worked line out Torrington Prop Carl Owen was the last man up with ball in hand.
The Saints were further penalised by the Sin Binning of Paul Winterbottom and Skipper Adam Kellow. If Torrington thought that this would open up the game they were sorely mistaken. The tries for the Saints were rolling in, Sam Rhodes, James Earp, Rob Jeffs,Tate Richardson a third for Welland a brace for replacement Sam Tank one of which was an absolute gem following up his own up and under to regather the ball and score.
Man of the match Andy Ashwin's personal points tally was 23 and with the Saints traveling up to Totnes for next weeks match the coaching staff will be very busy.
