St Austell's travelling faithful must wonder if their hearts can handle the excitement or their nerves can withstand the second half especially the last quarter of every match so far this season, to come from behind and win is fantastic but to do so away against strong opposition is outstanding.
It started brightly for the Saints who took play straight into Withycombes 22 and were awarded a penalty, unfortunately this was missed and was the end of the dream start, the home side then pressured St Austell and Paddy Shore converted his chance to open the scoring. Play then went into the Home sides half and Andy Ashwin struck a lovely drop goal to level. It was Saints who let Withycombe in for their first try failing in a restart from their own 22 by not chasing the kick, great play from Ben Hall fed Adam Lewes the scoring pass with Shore converting. St Austell rallied again, Skipper Adam Kellow leading the charge creating room for the St Austell back line James Earp, broke tackles and wing Alex Welland bought the Saints back into things.
At half time the score stood at 8-8 and the home team scored almost immediately from the restart, once converted St Austell now had to chase the game, Scrum Half Matt Shepherd and Flanker Paul Winterbottom terrorised the Withycombe back row and realising this is where the advantage was coming from Saints adapted their game. A try from Winterbottom to take the score to 15-13, a penalty from Shepherd to take the lead then Shepherd again dealt the killing blow, the second half lasted 59 minutes some 19 minutes of extended play for no apparent reason, St Austell's better fitness had shone through and Skipper Adam kellow was emotionally awarded Man of The Match.
St Austell's reserve squad "The Sinners" thrashed Hayle's reserve outfit 64 -3 in a thrilling match at Tregorrick Park with many players now staking a claim for first team representation, selection will be a welcome headache for the Coaches and Team Manager.
