Credit where credit is due writes Phil Raddenbury, the Wadebridge grounds team plus helpers had made every effort to get the pitch playable and by doing so have helped negate a fixtures back up toward the end of the season. St Austell were forced to make a change prior to kick off with Konnor Ewudzi injuring himself in the warm up thus promoting James Earp from Coach to Bench!
The match started frantically and after some early probing by both teams it was St Austell that came away with 3 points a neat penalty by Cavan Boyer in the 8th minute after 12 clean phases of rugby a body check style tackle by Wadebridge suddenly halting proceedings. The Camels responded well and they forced St Austell toward their try line and by not releasing the ball it offered James Grubb the chance to level with 13 minutes gone. What followed after a blistering break by Wing James Martin was 20 minutes of attacking play by St Austell on the Camels try line and it is here that the visitors failed to take the advantage of a pack that Wadebridge at this stage had no answer to and when repeated opportunities arose, decisions and stoic defence squandered them. why go wide when the pack is going forward. In this period a break through by No8 Rob Jeffs had the team celebrating however this was judged to have been held up.
The game changed shape after this, turnover ball from the 22 let the Camels breathe a sigh of relief and St Austell had to change the back row of Jeffs and Rhodes who at this stage had been at the bottom of everything. Silly penalties helped the Camels back up field and James Grubb was on hand to steady the ship and add the 3 extra points and just when you thought it would turn around with just 3 points being the difference Jake Grubb clinically finished a defensive mistake to turn around at 11-3 leaving Saints ruing missed opportunity.
The opening 15 minutes of the second half put the home side out of touch with 2 tries and one conversion, the first was straight from the restart, a Grubb combination from James to Jake the switch completely wrong footing the defence. The second approaching the Saints 22 with play being quickly taken outside a missed pass with hooker Matt Tarby neatly finishing the move and a conversion by James Grubb. The game from here lost a little shape, the heavy conditions taking their toll on both sides. Saints again gained possession for a decent period but failed to convert this into points, Wadebridge had a player sin binned which was awarded to Richard Dawe for a high tackle, however the Camels still made St Austell force the errors. Wadebridge were worthy of their win easing the pressure at the lower end of the league table and Saints face a tough away game at Sidmouth.
Thanks again to all of St Austell's 'massive' support.
