The Sinners and Colts faced Saltash wining 48-10 and 17-45 respectively, whilst the Saints took on a tricky looking fixture against Burnham-on-Sea at Tregorrick in a match sponsored by Tristan Hicks Electrical.
With Storm Brian making its way across southwest England the forecast didn’t look great for free flowing rugby, but in a game which defied expectations the Saints put on one of their best defensive and attacking displays of the season to register 8 tries and stop the plucky visitors from registering a score of any kind, in a 46-0 victory.
Saints played against a strong wind in the first half and the visitors belied their lowly league position as they exerted a period of intense pressure. Saints sucked it up and worked their way patiently up field where after a series of forward drives the ball was moved wide for fly half Chris Ashwin to weave his way over. 12 mins Try Chris Ashwin Conv Cav Boyer ( 7-0 ).
Having adapted, the Saints began to play rugby that they would have been proud of no matter what the conditions. In a move that encompassed backs and forwards, which swept from one side of the pitch to the other, it was Liam Freeman who had been involved at least 3 times in the build-up who supported well to take the offload from Shane Johns and cross the line. 23 mins Try Liam Freeman ( 12-0 ).
The pressure kept on building with Burnham defending stoutly and continuing to look to attack whenever they could. Following a series of 5m scrums it was George Knowles who forced his way over for the next score. 33 mins Try George Knowles Conv Cav Boyer ( 19-0 ).
All 3 tries were different in style and execution and so was the 4th bonus point try as Cav Boyer followed up a kick and controlled it well before falling over the line. 35 mins Try Cav Boyer ( 24-0 ).
The Saints had secured the bonus point before half time but the team talk concentrated on playing the second half as if the score was 0-0. With a strong wind behind them, the lads knew that they could not wait for something to happen but had to be proactive and impose their game.
With the forwards continuing to provide good ball and the Burnham attack struggling to break the gain line it was a spilt ball moved quickly to Cav Boyer that brought about try number 5 as he dotted down in the corner. 48 mins Try Cav Boyer ( 29-0 ).
It was time to freshen things up so Pete Rowe and Ben Chenoweth were brought on to bring extra impetus. The Saints continued to play at a great pace and a good break from Max Duggan was followed by a well-timed pass to George Knowles who steamed in for his second of the day. 58 mins Try George Knowles ( 34-0 ).
Max Duggan then scored himself following excellent support play. 63 mins Try Max Duggan Conv Liam Freeman ( 41-0 ).
Stalwart Tony Knight was then replaced by Hector Bright for the final 17 minutes.
The final try of the day followed a brilliantly executed cross field kick to full back CJ Boyce who gathered a difficult ball and scooted over. 75 mins Try CJ Boyce ( 46-0 ).
In a quality game Burnham deserve great credit for their never say die attitude and desire to keep playing. While they are in a tough spot at the moment, with that attitude I am sure they will soon begin to climb the table.
For the Saints there were heroes all over the field. Apart from the try scorers, veteran Adam Kellow was a force of nature in tight and loose play and Andy Inch showed why he is attracting the attention of the County selectors with another barnstorming performance.
The Saints now have to re-focus and prepare for the difficult away trip to Chard this coming Saturday. The Somerset side have had a mixed start to the season but with a little luck would have increased their points tally. It is a very tough place to go and get a result but nobody expects any game to be easy in this league.
