The collective heart rate for St Austell's "Massive" support must hopefully by now returning to normal, this would have been a match made in heaven for the neutral but much to the relief of the Saints against the heartache of Bideford it was a day where the faithful were to witness a rare win over Bideford.
The home side with the conditions in their favour raced into an early lead starting with a first minute penalty kick for Scrum Half Matt Shepherd, from the restart the Saints immediately took play into the Bideford 22 relentlessly moving play from side to side attacking the goal line, it was Prop Mark Martin who crashed over to score the opening try with a well struck conversion for Shepherd. Bideford at this stage could not counter the Saints at the breakdown, the home sides line up in defence quickly forcing the visitors to infringe. This gave Shepherd another penalty which he placed perfectly between the uprights then six minutes later it was Shepherd converting his own try, Twenty minutes gone and twenty points to the good!
However, this is where the champagne Rugby started to fizz out and Bideford started to play proving that their place in top end of the league is well founded, they started to compete putting in some cohesive phases of play, both sides were leaking penalties but Bideford finally crossed the Saints line in the 35th minute a lovely move cutting the Saints defence for Flanker Richie Allen to Score and Ollie Wickett to convert, this rallied the Saints and Wing Sam Tank was happy to return the favour after a series of attacking drives from the forwards and the back line expertly creating the break in defence. Half-time a breathless 30 points to 7.
Bideford started the second half in the same style of the Saints' previous one, a penalty in the first minute by Wickett sensible kicking deep into the home 22 placing the home side under pressure, this pressure forcing mistakes 3/4 Chris Snell seizing the opportunity to score in the 50th minute after a series of kick and chases. The play was all in the Saints half, the few occasions that the home side made breaks into opposition territory and looking certain to add to the points tally they either ran short of ideas or made the wrong decisions, but it was still enough to briefly ease the pressure. Bideford kept clawing back Wickett kicking another penalty then Wing Sam Olde scorched his way over the line again Wickett converting. Saints now showed some resolve and worked their way back into the match now with just a 3 point cushion, play was cantered around the midfield yellow cards for either side did little to further open things up and in the last play of the match Wicket's unerring accuracy failed him his penalty attempt from half way falling short.
