Just as important was the securing of a valuable bonus point that helped to push the Saints up to 10th place in the league. The performance was in stark contrast to last Saturday's lacklustre display against Clevedon and will rekindle confidence for the remainder of the season.
It stayed dry for the kick off with a slight breeze, the pitch however was feeling the after effects of the recent wet weather as it cut up in places during the game. The home side got off to a bad start when the kick off was fumbled and the Saints pack were quick to bundle the hosts into touch. The visitors used the possession from the resulting line out to apply pressure in the Cully 22. After 3 minutes Saints No 10 Liam Freeman used his overlapping runners as a decoy to break through for an unconverted try. The travelling Saints supporters early expectations were soon dashed as Cully spent some time in the Saints’ half forcing a series of infringements. Cully No 15 Adam Pearce eased his side back into the match with three successful penalties to put the hosts 9-5 in front lead half way through the first half. The Saints weathered the storm and a high tempo attack saw winger Ben Chenoweth go close in the corner. With the home side defence stretched, Cully winger Joshua Barratt was given a Yellow card for killing the ball to prevent a probable try. The reprieve was short-lived as Saints tails were up and sniffing the whitewash Chenoweth dived in near the posts for the second try. Converted by Andy Ashwin (9-12). This was quickly followed by a fine penalty from distance by Ashwin from just inside the 10m (9-15). A now rare visit into the visitors’ 22 by the home side resulted in a knock on, a good advantage played by referee Harry Garmston (Somerset) which the Saints fully exploited. Skilful footwork by full back Dan Pearce created the gap for the speedster to accelerate through and the chase to the Cully line ended under the sticks for a converted try to put the Saints in a commanding 9-22 lead at halftime.
The Saints extended their lead 8 minutes into the 2nd half after a clever kick over the top was gathered by a gazelle like leap by centre Alex Welland to dot down in the corner (9-27). Confidence was now oozing through the ranks of the Saints team and it was not long before prop Hugh Noott crashed over from short range taking a few Cully forwards with him in the process! (9-32). Centre Callum Wilson scythed through for the Saints’ fifth try converted by Andy Ashwin (9-39). Alex Welland crowned a fine personal display with his second try when he scooped up a ball dropped by Cully on the halfway to outstrip the beleaguered home defence to score. Andy Ashwin’s conversion made the final score 9-46.
Man of the Match was shared between Dan Pearce for a near faultless display that included a try saving tackle in first half and some blistering runs. And Alex Welland for a more than solid game at centre, always there challenging the restarts topped by two excellent tries.
