The Sinners saved the best for last to inflict only the second defeat of the season on C2C League Champions Camborne 2s.
The home side were in a determined mood as they looked to secure the points they needed to avoid the dreaded 10th place and eradicate any remaining fears of relegation.
Skipper George Tregilgas led his team out through a passionate tunnel formed by the jubilant U16s who had just beaten Newquay Hornets 22-10 in the Shield Final.
The game kicked off under blue skies and in warm sunshine in front of a large crowd who gave vociferous backing to the home side throughout the game. The Sinners put the visitors under early pressure and Colt Vinnie Hacker on the overlap could not find a way through against a physically strong Town defence. The home side gave away a penalty just outside the 22 and in a blink of an eye Camborne tapped and swept downfield in a blistering display of pace and handling that was finished in style by full back Ewan Murray (0-5). The Sinners dusted themselves off and went through the phases before the “Abdominal Propman” Hugh Noott crashed over, Chris Ashwin added the extras to make it 7-5 after 15 minutes.
The home side continued to dominate and centre Ewan Richards, who has impressed since his recent step up from the Colts, was just held up on the line. On the half-hour mark the Sinners extended their lead when number eight Hector Bright carried strongly to score in the corner (12-5). Right on halftime the home pack took a scrum against the head and Bright looked to have scored only to be denied by more heroic defending.
Camborne started the second half with determination and put the home side under intense pressure. The Sinners stoically manned the barricades in the face of a ten-minute pounding from the Camborne forwards. They looked to have survived only for the visitors’ jet-heeled backs to gather the in-goal dropout to score in the Gym corner (12-12). Again, the home side’s response was instant, with Tregilgas punching deep holes in the Camborne defence before his centre partner Richards stormed through to put the home side back in front (17-12).
The Sinners went in search of the bonus point try, and a charging run from full-back Charlie Reynolds was stopped just inside the visitors’ 22. Quick ruck ball created a gap for scrum-half Dan Tyrrell to scamper through to score in the Ruck & Maul corner to delight of the home support. With the clock ticking down, Camborne’s backs clicked into gear to score the try of the night with the impressive duo Oli Roberts and Ewan Murray combining with the latter scoring in the corner (22-19). The Sinners played out the final minutes without any further drama to record an impressive win to the delight of those on the pitch and in the stand.
Camborne 2s were magnanimous in defeat and are undoubtedly worthy Champions who will make a big impact in Counties One next season. The Sinners can now forget any relegation woes and look forward to their Clubs Shield Semi-Final away to St Ives 2s next week.
