Bennies made the short trip down to the playground to play their local rivals Whitehaven on a chilly afternoon.
Bennies kicked off the game and after a misplaced clearance kick from Whitehaven they quickly went on the attack and it took 2 minutes for Bennies to get their first try of the game with Kurt Maudling hitting a hole with a superb line and went over to make it 7-0 in the opening few minutes. After the restart, Bennies continued trying to use their backs with great rewards but the attack was short lived when they were caught short at the breakdown and conceded a penalty. This was kicked to the corner by Whitehaven but it was overthrown and Bennies found themselves back in possession. The ball was spread wide and after some great hands in midfield the ball found itself to Jamie Doran who outpaced the defence to score to make it 14-0.
Whitehaven were trying to use their big pack to batter through Bennies defences but time and again Bennies stood up to the challenge. Bennies regained possession after a knock on by Whitehaven and again span the ball wide. The ball was recycled and spread back along the line to find winger Andrew Middleton to make it 21-0.
Whitehaven started to gain some momentum in the game and used their scrum as a weapon with Bennies finding themselves on the wrong end of the referees whistle at the scrum. This was made worse when No8 Scott Wood took 10mins in the bin for arguing about too many decisions. This lead to Whitehaven taking scrum after scrum and after the referee lost his patience and awarded a penalty try to Whitehaven to make it 21-7.
Bennies kicked off and Whitehaven spread the ball to midfield where the Whitehaven back row forward lifted his elbow when going into the tackle which resulted in handbags in the middle of the field. This resulted in The Whitehaven Back row taking 10mins along with Kurt Maudling. Whitehaven took the penalty to make it 21-10 at half time.
Whitehaven started the second half and Bennies took the ball on through there forwards. Bennies spread the ball to winger Jamie Doran who stepped through the defense only to be stopped by a high tackle 5m out which resulted in a yellow card for the whitehaven player and a penalty try to make it 28-10.
Bennies were gaining more and more possession and looking dangerous but some dogged defending kept them at bay but after the forwards made good inroads, the ball was again spread wide in a simple move which seen winger Andrew Middleton go over again to make it 35-10.
Bennies then had two people sent off within 10 minutes of eachother, Prop Calumn Howse and Flanker Ryan Fisher, which were for high tackles after a team warning. This meant Whitehaven had their tails up but Bennies drove back the haven attacks time and time again but after 15mins of defending their own line the resistance fell with Whitehaven using their overlap to score in the corner to make it 35-17 final score.
This performance was an all around team performance. Even though the backs scored the tries the forwards made the platform with a good showing in the lineout and stood up well under pressure from a much larger Whitehaven pack. James Finnegin was the pick of the forwards closely followed by Ross Anderson and Josh Jenkinson, Steven Wood showed his experience ordering everyone around using his centres Jordan Burns and Kurt Maudling effectively but man of the match went to Winger Jamie Doran who was a threat all afternoon.
Bennies are at home this weekend against unbeaten League Leaders Cockermouth.
Their will be a curtain raiser with Bennies u10s who will also be mascots for the game.
