Our Player of the Year award is named after past player, captain and Old Edwardian, Danny O’ Brien (1958-99). (Photo: front row, fifth from left)
The following extract is taken from an article written by Ian Hargraves at the Liverpool Echo, in tribute to Danny:
One of Merseyside’s most remarkable sportsmen, former Liverpool, Orrell and Lancashire prop forward...O’ Brien, who was 41 and lived in Rainford, was educated at St. Edward’s College in West Derby and represented them at several sports, including rugby, before joining the old Liverpool club at St. Michael’s.
From there he went to Orrell, where he was a member of arguably their finest ever side, and earned several caps for Lancashire, culminating in a spectacular match-winning try in the County Championship final.
A fine athlete who could run the 400m in under 50 seconds, he recently completed the London triathlon...
Thank you, and rest in peace, Danny.
