It was third v eight at the start of the day and a crowd of 66 were entertained with an end to end game and no shortage of goalmouth drama.
With skipper Parsons serving a one match ban, Shug'aa took over the captains armband, playing up front with Burton, and Finch and Pickup joined forces in the heart of the defence with Webb returning at left back.
Wick started much the stronger side as they had a fierce wind at their backs and forced a succession of early dangerous inswinging corners which the young keeper Coles, making his home debut, dealt with well in the Steyning goal. On 12 minutes one of these dangerous corners lead to a frantic goal mouth scramble which Steyning evening scrabbled free.
On 19 minutes Steyning found themselves in front. The was well worked wide to Harris, who managed to slip the ball to Skipper at the second attempt. Skippers low pull back to the edge of the area, was drilled home low by Burton from just inside the box through a crowd of players. The goal was the start of a good spell from Steyning who were playing much the tidier football of the two teams and a number of neat passing moves were continually broken down in and around the final third.
At the other end Wick were looking dangerous with a more direct style of play and Harper and Peake were causing Steyning problems with their direct running at pace. On the half hour Harper should have done better when he fired over from the penalty spot when the ball was cut back to him. however Wick on ly had to wait a few more minutes for the equaliser when an inswinging corner was nodded down for Peake to stab home in to the roof of the net from close range.
The only remaining chance of the half fell to Harris who shot over when well placed after driving through the middle of the Wick defence. he team went in at 1-1 and Steyning could be encouraged by the fact they would have the strong wind at their backs in the second half.
The early stages of the second half was all Steyning as they pressed high up the pitch ,giving Wick little time to settle. Alfie Gritt was coming more in to the game on the left hand side and Shug'aa and Burton were starting to look more threatening as a forward pair. On 53 minutes this good spell was rewarded with a stunning strike from Shug'aa. A quick throw was taken on the right hand side inside the Wick half and Shug'aa ran on to this near the corner of the penalty area. The ball had one bounce and Shug'aa hit a dipping first time volley that flew over the keeper and in to the top left hand keeper. An unstoppable shot and an early contender for goal of the season.
Wick continued to look dangerous on the break and Harper was stretching the Town defence on a number of occassions with his direct running. He created a few half chances for himself as well as a number of chances for his team mates, who shot over when well placed on 67 minutes and then they squandered a great one on one chance shooting wide.
On 77 minutes Steyning came again and a dipping drive from Burton came bouncing back off the post, and then the same player shot straight at the keeper when played in by Shug'aa. Finch also had a header from a corner that was nodded of the line by a Wick defender.
The Steyning faithful were sensing the one goal lead may not be enough ,and in the last five minutes they had to endure constant Wick pressure and Finch and Webb somehow managed to clear of the line when it seemed Wick were certain to score, and then Coles made a cracking high save in the last minute.
As the final whistle went there was relief for Steyning who knew they had been in a tough match and who were well pleased with the three points. Wick will feel maybe a draw would have been a fair result however they didn't take the chances that came their way.
