Dragons come from behind to defeat Barton

Steve Ireland (GAFFER)19 Apr 2015 - 21:33

Two second half Glenn Hozier goals were enough to overturn a half time losing position.

Match report by Jamie Hopson:

The Dragons made the journey to Tuffley for the match against Barton Rovers, looking to make it three wins on the bounce. Jamie Hopson arriving as a passenger in Stanno's 'pimp mobile' looking a shadow of his former self due to this weeks birth of his baby girl. Also in attendance was Steedo, looking like a Gloucester 'brother' in his black Volkswagon Golf with black beanie hat on! Mike Wilson's 'Ginsters' pasty aroma car air freshener was a particular highlight.

After the 5 mile walk to the pitch, and the usual (lack of) warm up, the Dragons were ready to rock!! Gordon was in goal this week due to Neil being away. Is it gay-pride weekend again?? Tockers had arrived, and even had a shirt this week, to take his place at right back. Mike Wilson made a rare appearance from his country retreat in the deepest forest, and to Jamie Hopson's DISGUST, got the nod up front!! Even Rob 'the phantom finisher' Mcgeever was more worthy of that role!!

The game began at a fast pace on a very hard, uneven pitch that was more akin to the sahara desert than a council playing field due to the lack of grass on offer! The Dragons were getting the ball down and trying to play using the wings very well, for a change! Stanno hit an early shot from range over the bar. Barton Rovers were also trying to get the ball down and were causing some problems by playing very narrow and overloading through the middle. After 11 minutes, the Dragons lost their Scottish warrior as Steedo 'sicknote' had to leave the field with another injury. He only gets in because he's a TV personality!! On came Mark Wood to play wide left and Stanno moved into the centre.

The Dragons seemed to lose their shape for a short period and this led to a goal for the home side on 20 minutes. A one-two midway into the Dragons half, followed by some neat skill from the striker going between two defenders, resulted in him being through one on one against Gordon. He finished well and gave the keeper no chance.
1-0 to Barton!!

Wastefulness in front of goal has been a problem this season for the Dragons and it was coming back to haunt them again. Wilson and Hozier perhaps should have done better with clear chances and Hopson failed to get a flick on a Mark Stanton up and under cross-shot that just went past the post. A neat move down the right involving Tockers, Hopson and Willo with the latter crossing for Hozier. He chested the ball into Hopson's path but his volley was a little wild and flew over the bar. Another Hopson volley from the edge of the box, this time with the left foot, was cleared off the line. A free kick in a prime position was wasted by PJ, even with the opossition wall doing the hokey-cokey! Hozier then forced a decent save from the keeper. Unbelievably the Dragons did not find a way through by half time and it remained 1-0!!

The Dragons knew they had to up it and started the second half very sharply. A Mike Wilson throughball into the right channel, althought overhit, was chased down by Hopson who forced a corner out of nothing. Stanno whipped it in right onto Glenn Hozier's head, and he doesnt miss those!!! 1-1 and the momentum with the away side.

Numerous attacking chances were coming the Dragons way now, but breaking down due to overhit passes or lack of support, due to Willo's lack of pace to keep up with his strike partner! Barton Rovers were dangerous on the break and created two or three decent chances with shots from in and around the box, but Gordon was more than up to the challenge making some good saves. Neil who?
The winning goal arrived on 58 minutes as a ball up the left channel was flicked on by Mark Wood towards Hozier who collected it in his stride. He powered away from the defender and hit an early left footed shot that the keeper could only help into the top corner. 2-1!!!
Rob Mcgeever replaced Willo 5 minutes later to bring some fresh legs into the game. Mcgeever showing a higher than usual level of aggression winning lots of headers and putting himself about.
There were a couple of chances to extend the lead. Hopson getting away down the right and clipping a ball across which took the keeper out of the game. Mark Wood arrived to head it home but couldnt quite stretch to reach it. He needs a longer neck!! A few minutes later Hozier was released by Mcgeever and, with the ball bouncing, lifted it over the keeper but just over the bar.
The home side rarely threatened after that with the Dragons defence thwarting most attacks and Gordon sweeping up really well behind them.

A real team effort today lads we ground out the result and worked hard for 90 minutes. Three wins in a row is quality at this time of the season! One more game left, lets finish the season on a high! And one game left for Glenn Hozier to score the 3 goals he needs to become the clubs all time leading scorer!
