Preparations So Far: James Etherington

Preparations So Far: James Etherington

Jack Wright2 Aug 2020 - 09:00

We caught up with first team manager, James Etherington, to see how he is settling in as the new manager for the Saints.

Ahead of yesterdays pre-season fixture with Greenalls PSO FC, we caught up with James to find out how he is settling in as a Saint, this is what he had to say...

"The team has prepared really well for today's fixture, with lots of work being done on and off the ball. It's been a really different pre-season with the whole Covid-19 situation, but the lads have come into pre-season with the right frame of mind and got on well"

How has the first couple of months been at the club?

"It's been brilliant, and coming into a new club I wanted to show everyone that I was the right man for the club. It's a fantastic club, it's a real family run club and that was one thing from the start that I made sure all the lads got into their minds as well, that the fact you might be the best player in the world, but if you haven't got the attitude, your not right for St Martins"

We asked James what is goals and objectives are for the upcoming campaign...

"We have a small squad this season, and so I want to make sure everyone is given an opportunity, that's one of the main goals, keeping everyone happy"

"My biggest goal and objective is to get as close as possible to those play off positions, I feel with the squad we've got, it is possible! Another dream of mine and coming in to find from the committee is winning that first game FA Vase or FA Cup if we are lucky enough to get into it. It would be absolutely amazing to do that!"

Are there any players who have stood out in pre-season and are ready to go for the new season?

"Ryan Malone who came in during pre-season is an absolute standout performer, from the start his fitness and quality, and leadership to push the lads. Also, James Durman who is the longest serving player at the club is a real leader, and pushes the players and himself, and as a player he is a role model, which is why we wanted to keep him"

"But I feel all the lads have their own qualities and it's going to be a special season"

The Saints first pre-season fixture against a strong Greenalls PSO FC side finished with 2-2, which turned out to be a great first test for Etherington's team, who now prepare for a trip to Shropshire rivals, Wem Town in a "behind-closed-doors" fixture on Tuesday night.
