V K Sports (h) 5th August 2017 D 1 - 1
First day of the new season always brings an element of excitement and for our first game we were to face k sports at home. K sports endured a successful season last season finishing 5th and we knew it wasn't going to be an easy opener. Some new faces in the lineup, but also a lot of old, We started the game quite brightly trying to gain control of the game using our passing game. However, k sports started to get a foothold, going very direct but battling well and picking up lots of second balls. There wasn't much being created but k sports took the lead midway through the first half. An extremely dubious free kick was awarded just outside our box, and after Matt bishop in goal had produced a fine save from the resulting effort, the ball came back off the post only for the k sports full back to react quickest and poke the ball home to go in at ht 1-0 up. We made 2 changes at ht to react and start mixing up our approach and it certainly seemed to work. We started the 2nd half on the front foot and McGinty soon had a chance, cutting across the centre back from a Francis centre to flick an effort towards goal for the keeper to make a good save. Roomes and Williams were starting to gain control in midfield, Evans was finding space in front of the k sports defence and after an hour we equalised. Francis pressing high and winning the ball was picked up by Evans who turned and drove towards the k sports box sliding a ball down the side for McGinty. The keeper was coming off his line and McGinty produced a sublime finish to chip the keeper from the edge of box to draw the sutts level. The goal galvanised us again and we were pressing for the win, perhaps slightly too much though as k sports caught us on the break after 80 and an effort came back off the bar, again 2 mins later bishop saved down low. We had some chances ourselves too from Howlett and an Evans free kick, but we were reduced to 10 men however in the 90th minute after Roomes picked up his 2nd yellow card so the last few minutes of injury time we made sure we took a share of the spoils. In truth the draw was probably a fair result and one that we know was a good point. The first game of any season is always a difficult one and k sports will be up there come the end. We take the point and performance as a positive stride and we continue again Tuesday night against Kent football.
