Three first half goals gave United a comprehensive win in a competitive final between the two Sutton teams.
United got off to the perfect start with an opening goal just one minute into the match, when Nick’s cross from the right was volleyed superbly in off the post by Sutton’s Player of the Season Joe.
The next few minutes were vital as United had to weather some early pressure from Town in their bid to get straight back into the match. However, United remained solid at the back and given the chance to break, Joe and Nick combined again as Nick’s header sailed narrowly wide of the goal.
With just 7 minutes played, it was United who got that all important second goal with a sublime free-kick from Keane that curled into the top corner of the net, giving the Town keeper no chance.
Town then threatened from a series of set pieces that always seemed to have a United head on to clear. In fact, it was United who looked the most dangerous in front of goal and sure enough they stretched their lead in the 24th minute with an individually crafted goal from Keane, who fired in from 18 yards out.
Some good work from Louie on the right resulted in another effort from Jon just before the break which was gathered by the Town keeper, and United finished a strong half three goals to the good.
Half time 3-0
As the sun beat down in Solihull, United made four substitutions during the second half, with Craig, Dan F, Dylan and Dan C all slotting into position to contribute to a solid and professional team performance.
In fact, for most of the second half United were so organised and disciplined, they were happy to let Town have the ball and just protect their comfortable lead.
Reece actually had very little to do in the United goal as Ollie, Liam and Cormac did a sterling job in front of him to keep Town at bay. And when Town did look like breaching the back line with a good move in the 61st minute, James was superb in the holding role to challenge and clear up the danger.
It was United who came closest to scoring again when Jon’s free-kick from the left struck the woodwork. And with the match coming to a close, Kelvin had time for one more effort from outside the penalty box that rose over the cross-bar.
United’s professional display ensured that it was the green side of Sutton who were crowned the U16 League Cup Champions 2018. And as the celebrations got under way, United were presented with both the League Cup and the Premier Division trophy, thus bringing a memorable end to their junior football.
