ANY thoughts Tavistock may have had of an easier ride in the Cornwall & Devon Division were soon shattered. After two seasons battling to dodge the drop from the Western Counties Division, the Moorlanders went down at the end of last term.
And they soon learned there are no easy games at the next level down as Falmouth dominated for long enough to close out the game.
Falmouth led 17-0 at half-time and had kept Tavistock penned in their own territory for most of it.
The second half was a different story as Tavistock were much more competitive, but the damage was done.
“We had seven or eight first XV players missing for one reason or another – and it took time for us to gel,” said coach Simon Fuller.
“We only took 16 players, which meant next to nothing on the bench, which didn’t help.
“The second half was a try each – Tom Rickard scored for us – and a much more even affair.
“What we couldn’t do was get the first-half deficit back.
“But I saw more commitment and a stronger work ethic from us in the second half and if we keep playing like that we will be fine.”
