Tilbury 2 Aveley 1 (Attendance 96)
Tilbury scored twice in the final 3 minutes to take the three points to beat local rivals Aveley on a warm, but windy afternoon. Tilbury manager Paul Vaughan made a number of changes, including a debut in goal for Chico Ramos and the first start of the season for Jake Pooley at the centre of defence. Aveley were the stronger side in the first period, with Wall bringing off a fine save from Ramos and Nesbitt just firing over. Lee Weemes also had an early effort firing over from 25 yards. On 20 minutes Tilbury had a great chance when a Weemes cross, found both Jacobs and Daniel who both swung and missed. 3 minutes later a poor back pass saw Oakley hit the base of the post from an acute angle. Just before the break Oakley was again denied by the excellent Ramos.
Both sides created chances early in the second half and both sides could have scored in the 66th minute when a Harry Cook free kick hit the outside of the post and seconds later Aveley struck the upright when Ross Wall curled his effort. A minute later Aveley took the lead when Jay leader headed home a Danny Hopkins corner. Ramos continued to keep Tilbury in the game and despite close efforts, finally scored with 3 minutes remaining. A Tilbury counter attack saw Joe Christou head down for Danny Francis to hit left footed into the net passed Giddens, after good work from substitute James Zanelli.
The goal seemed to spur the Dockers and they looked the likely side to score. With the game moving into the 5th minute of added time, Tilbury were rewarded for their hard work when Harry Cook shot towards goal only to see his shot handled in the box by Nurudeem, leaving the referee the simple decision to award a penalty. Francis hit home into the roof of the net to score his second and dent his former side’s chances, despite only being on the pitch for the final 13 minutes. From the kick off the referee blew for full time and to the delight of the Tilbury side who never gave up.
After the game Paul Joynes Assistant Manager said "A good team effort. There was desire and application for the whole 90 minutes and competed throughout. I was pleased with the determination and application of goal scoring hero Danny Francis who has not had as much game time as he would like. We hope we take this handwork into our game on Tuesday at Redbridge"
