Following the under 13’s opening fixture of the Surrey cup being a 4-4 draw with Rosslyn Park, both clubs went on to win all of their remaining fixtures and finished on the same points.
As games are recorded as a 6 point differential max, it meant it was a dead heat for the top spot and Surrey gave the clubs two options, a coin toss, or a play off at a neutral ground with a neutral ref.
With perhaps both clubs feeling they had unfinished business, a play off it was to be.
A tense morning for the coaches and players included being ready to leave early for the first time in the season for some. For the superstitious, the potential presence of certain caps, boots, dogs and fleeces on the final result were debated.
One of the things I love about Rugby is that ninety nine times out of one hundred the team who plays better than the other team wins. Unlike other sports where a team or individual can play badly and scrape a win with a lucky shot or goal.
Unfortunately for Twickenham, Rosslyn Park were the better team on Sunday and won 6-4, thus securing top spot in the league. It was a tough day for players, parents and coaches after something like 15 consecutive wins.
They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, so the T’s will take the learning into next weeks 3rd/4th place Surrey cup play off, and the season beyond.
