It was a game of two halves against Farnham B today as despite taking the lead and going in 14-10 up at half time, unfortunately we ran out of steam and conceded 24 points in the second half to leave the final score 34-14.
We had started strongly and took the game to Farnham, our forwards running strongly with the ball, putting Noah in position to get in under the posts. Farnham came into the match, we conceded several penalties to allow them to progress up the pitch and we were not able to keep them from breaching our try-line.
There were some great performances today and Ollie made a great contribution by making some fantastic tackles and also initiating our second try. Under pressure he was able to take a high ball and managed to find Nathan at full-back. Nathan was able to dance round most of the Farnham team before offloading to Jerome and there was only one outcome when he gets the ball against a ragged defence 10m from the try line.
With Dan making both conversions it took our lead to 14-5. It’s always dangerous playing a B team when their A team don’t have a match and the game seemed to turn when Farnham were able to bring on 6 new forwards midway through the first half. From there the match seemed to gradually slip away and we were never able to get back into our stride.
Too many times in the second half they were able to breach our defence and run in tries from long range. The players’ MoTM went to Adam I. Adam stepped up as captain today (with Bertie being away) and really put a shift in - it’s great to see him stepping up and leading the players by example.
The Coaches’ MoTM went to Ben, who seemed to pop up everywhere on the pitch and was really positive in his tackling. Lacking forwards today, he also came on as a flanker in the second half. Jimmy will send out the details, but I think even though we lost the quarter final today, we are still actually in the competition so we will pick our heads up and go again next week.
