A good win in the sunshine at Parkfields for the U16s against stiff opposition.
The Regals came to Parkfields as runners up in their pool having had a strong set of results. Off the back of a tour to Portugal the U16s were carrying four tour injuries and a few unavailable players. But the sixteen who were around, started well with Kaya popping over a penalty in the early exchanges.
The Regals struck back with some strong forwards carries to take the lead 3-7. A quick lineout throw saw the Ts retake the lead and a tough conversion made it 10-7. The boys were starting to find some of their tour fluidity and after some good team play, the infamous willy wonker call saw Will stretch to reach over the line from short range to score. 15-7.
Stevie was back at 8, with Ryan returning from injury at hooker and with the rest of the forwards, the Regals scrum was creaking a little. Under pressure in front of their posts, the ball was dislodged from the scrum for Sam O to neatly pick up the ball and go over under the posts. 22-7. A healthy lead at half time.
A bit of a change around in the backs in the second half, saw Jack C move from scrum-half to fullback. Big Sam S came on for Louis who disappointingly had a football related knock from Saturday. Gus's good afternoon came to end though after a heavy collision and Louis had to jump back on at 11. The Ts struck first in the second with Kaya scoring after good work by forwards and backs combining down the right. Kaya converted to make it 29-7.
Two decent cross field kicks from Conal led to the next two tries. Bounce of the ball on the first wrong footed all the Ts players and allowed the Regals to get one back to make it 29-14.
Regals weren't giving up and perhaps with the help of a few more on their bench, they kept going and made two strong line breaks, only to be thwarted by two very strong, try saving tackles by Jack C. Any real chance of a come back was then snuffed out with the next cross field from Conal that ended up with Jacob scoring on the outside to make it 34-12.
Regals did break through again to grab their third to get to 17 points, but the final say was with the Ts with another good bit of possession. The ball found it's way to Jacob on the right wing again and he sent their three covering defenders the wrong way with lovely footwork and then pace to score. Kaya's conversion hit the post to end it 39-17.
We had Martha-Rose - a 17 year old refereeing us for the first time and she had a great match. Kept the game flowing with good control. Great to see a young female referee doing so well.
On to the semis...
