Interview with Coach Joseph Winstanley after Sunday's game

Terry Clouter28 Jan 2014 - 21:26

We spoke to Coach Joseph Winstanley after Sunday's game against Farnborough RFC in the warmth of the Twickenham RFC lounge. Here's what Joseph had to say:

Q: A very dramatic game with the weather but it was a very pleasing display from Twickenham, what did you think of the performance today?

A:JW: I'm really pleased. We took on an experienced Farnborough side, probably more accomplished than our team considering the unavailability of players. Some of our 'young guys' got an opportunity in the team while some of the more veteran guys got an opportunity to get themselves back fit and get a good performance behind them. The conditions were great for 15 minutes, but then the last 35 were obviously quite difficult and cold.

Q: As you say, you had a number of guys returning from injury; Matthew Clouter, Deven Clarke etc.. Man of the Match Dominic Jansen was a man on fire today and won the coveted Man Of The Match award. It must be very pleasing for the coming months as you move forward through the season.

A :JW: Yes, hugely. Those guys are important squad players and we want them back and fit for competition. It was slightly concerning to see some of the players coming off early and we will have a look and see how they are as they are, obviously all are players we want to get back out there, but injuries are part of the game. We were very pleased to see everyone stand up; Ethan Garvey, Blake McMaster, Frank Taylor, Callum Taylor and Callum Hales for instance as this is their first season at Twickenham RFC, but gave excellent performances. It was also pleasing to see Ferdia O’Sullivan out on the field.

Q: Would you agree that next week when you face Harrow RFC in the League you need to be on your toes and to play at your best.

A:JW: Yes absolutely - Harrow RFC are a great club and we need to play with style and conviction as well as follow our mantra of playing predictably unpredictably to win.
