It was an action packed start to 2023 at Whitecrook where Clydebank hosted the Villagers. In a match that swung backwards and forwards it took a 79th minute try before the Villagers eventually snuffed out the home fight and secured the victory, bringing all 5 points back to Castle Policies.
A strong opening quarter from Uddingston saw them open up a 14-7 advantage. Tries from Liam Quinn and Cammy Quinn, both converted by the latter, were dissected by a converted try for the hosts. Clydebank were next to strike, a well taken penalty narrowing the gap to just 4 points.
With the first half heading to a close things got exciting again. The Villagers struck first with James Brown crossing the whitewash before the Bankies hit back with 2 tries and a single conversion to head for the half time jaffas with a 22-19 lead.
As with the opening period, the Villagers struck first in the second half, Ru Anderson continuing his try scoring form with a well taken try, again converted by C Quinn but 6 minutes later the home side hit back with their 2nd penalty of the afternoon to close the score line back to 26-25 in the Villagers' favour.
With the match reaching the hour mark Fraser Watt crashed over for an unconverted try, but with only a 6 point advantage it was still very much anybody's game, and so it proved.
With 66 minutes played the Bankies secured the 4 try bonus with another well taken effort, the successful conversion nudging them back into a 1 point lead.
As the match headed into the final 10 minutes Captain Quinn took the responsibility on his own shoulders, successfully dissecting the posts with a well struck penalty and the Villagers were back in front 34-32. The final nail in the Clydebank coffin came in the 79 minute when Ross McFadden rounded off an excellent afternoon with a well deserved try. C Quinn once more added the extras to secure the 41-32 victory.
With various postponements in other fixtures the win moves the Villagers up to 4th in the table, but 5th placed Wigtownshire now have 2 games in hand over Uddingston.
Next Saturday, 14/01, the Villagers will be looking to continue their winning start to 2023 when they host Glasgow University Medics at Castle Policies. Kick off 2pm
