Uddingston hosted bottom of the table Irvine at Castle Policies this afternoon and between them served up 14 tries in a thrilling 66-26 win for the Villagers.
The match was only a couple of minutes old when the Villagers got the score board moving. Ru Anderson crossing the whitewash, with Captain Quinn securing the extras. Not to be outdone, the visitors hit back within 60 seconds, their try narrowing the score to 7-5.
This was the shock the Villagers needed, and the remaining 37 minutes of the first half were all Uddingston. A further 4 tries, all converted by Quinn, saw the Villagers head in for the half time team talk with the try bonus point already secured and a comfortable 35-5 advantage to take into the second half. Scoring honours for the Villagers went to McPherson, Blane Anderson, Irvine, and Liam Quinn.
If the first period had been a touch one sided, the second period provided a bit more drama for the home crowd. A second try for Ru Anderson, converted by Quinn, kicked things off before Irvine once more hit back with a converted try of their own.
At 42-12 the Villagers were still looking comfortable, and a fine try from Boyd, again converted by Quinn, pushed them further ahead. McPherson added his second try of the match 3 minutes later and at 54-12 with less than 20 minutes to play it all looked a bit academic.
Then Irvine woke up ! A 6 minute scoring spree from the visitors saw them add converted tries in the 68th and 74th minutes, pushing the score line to 54-26, but more importantly for Irvine, provided them with a 4 try bonus point to take back to Marress.
Despite this late fightback from the visitors it was Uddingston who closed the game out in style, Ru Anderson notching up his 3rd try of the afternoon before Crichton claimed the 10th home try of the afternoon in the final minutes. Quinn brought the curtain down on a fine kicking performance with his 8th successful conversion, taking the final score to 66-26.
This excellent all round performance sees the Villagers comfortably secured in the top half of the Division 2 table, and while promotion may be beyond them this season, there is still all to play for in the final 5 matches with the Villagers' results able to influence who will eventually lift the title.
