The Calum Fox era at Uddingston got off to a losing start today when the Villagers went down 24-19 in their away fixture against Waysiders Drumpellier.
A slow start for Uddingston saw them 12 points down after 14 minutes, the hosts securing 2 tries and a single conversion to put them in front.
A yellow card on 26 minutes for WD gave the Villagers some much needed momentum, and with the half time jaffas on the horizon it was Clinton Boyd who smashed his way over for the Villagers opening try. The conversion fell short but the half time whistle sounded with only a converted try between the sides.
The second half started much stronger for Uddingston and it only took 6 minutes for Ruairidh Anderson to collect his first try of the season. Anderson converted his own effort to level the scores at 12-12.
The next 20 minutes saw the sides battle hard but no real breaks emerging. It took until the 67th minute for the scoreboard to move again, and once more it was the hosts who scored, converting their try to push back into a 7 point lead.
With time running out the Villagers were still eager to claim the win, but once more it was WD who claimed the score with an unconverted try on 79 minutes. Full credit to this Uddingston side as they battled back in the final minute, Anderson once more scoring and converting to bring the score back to 24-19.
While the match had been lost, the losing bonus point may prove crucial later in the season. For the home side, a full 5 points was a good way to start their season.
Next Saturday, 09 Sep the Villagers travel to Clydebank for what is sure to be a tough encounter. kick off at 3pm.
