It all began with the UWLHC 1s warriors hiding from (No - not the opposition, Long Buckby, who were actually all rather pleasant) but from the chill of cold in their cars. The clubhouse was locked. The pitches were locked. Ian and his van were the only hope. After a small huddle around said van, whilst the pitches were opened, a delayed pushback allowed for a speedy yet intense warmup. Snappy words from Ian followed by yet another roar of 'Warwick on the 1-2' from Cap'n Bean and the game finally began, despite several team members still in desperate need of the clubhouse to be unlocked.
The first half was a battle as the team needed to switch on and focus. As the time ran on, the passes became stronger and the 1-2s became faster. The first goal was by fresher Rachel, who had done some great work storming down the left wing. The second goal, is one I can only describe as a divine gift. This player, had been on the pitch for less than 2 minutes. Yet when a short corner was awarded, and the original plan failed, Alice sent the ball in the direction of none other than myself. A cheeky small flick over a defenders stick and then, suddenly, the sound of the backboard filled my ears. I did not hear the cheer of my team mates, or hit the high fives coming towards me. I was too engrossed in staring at the goal that I had just scored; my debut goal for the UWLHC 1s. I can only assume my jaw was on the floor.
After this, the goals started coming more easily and by the end of the first half, we were 4-0 up with goals from Jess' foot (much to Kat's dismay) and Kirsty. The clubhouse was still locked- who would believe it? The haribos sent around during half time pumped everyone up for the second half- but I suppose the words of Ian and Bean helped too. A strong start to the second half (I'll kindly ignore the random 5 minutes where everyone seemed to lose the plot) allowed for some fantastic crosses across the goal from Jess; and the play up the right wing between Molly, Bean and Jess was on point.
While the defence took on an easier second half, they did not lose focus and some excellent transfers were seen. Possession was ours and it was as if the UWLHC warriors were circling the D, like eagles, waiting for prime opportunity to strike. The goals came- with another 2 from Kirsty and 1 from Alice. For her pride's sanity I feel the need to key in that majority of these goals could be linked to Bean's work- assisting her players to get goals... What more could you want from a captain?
As the end whistle blew- the final score stood at 7-0. Another fantastic score for the team. MOTM revealed that Zowie got passed on to Bean, a well deserved reward for all her hard efforts in the game. After swinging by teas- our very own star baker Jess delivers the team what can only be described as the most stunning cupcakes I've ever seen, and they tasted pretty good too. A happy convoy of mini's and fiat 500's rolled out the car park, and it was on to the next one.
