The Scorpions opened up festival season at the Blackheath Mini’s Festival and showed just how far they’d come over the first half of the season.

Old Whitgiftians were the first team faced in what was a tense but evenly contested match with both teams using quick ball to great effect. The Scorpions traded tries for the duration of the match with plenty of whole team tries, something that would be seen throughout all the matches today.

After a short break Scorpions faced the hosts Blackheath in a difficult match. Slightly over powered by a couple of the Blackheath players who ran with power up the middle, Scorpions kept their heads and tried to get the ball wide when in possession. The team kept their heads up though and showed great spirit in attack and defence.

Sidcup came next and again the Scorpions utilised width and a quick ball to exploit the gaps in the Sidcup defence.

There was plenty of good offloads and footwork from both sides and more than a few smiles on all the players faces as they shook hands after the match.

The penultimate team to be played was OE’s and the Scorpions made a very confident start. Strong tackles provided multiple turnovers while probing runs showed all the skill sets the Scorpions have developed over the season.

Hackney Bulls were the final opponents in another closely contested match. Again great offloading in contact and footwork were evident including one of the Bulls players showing off a rather impressive ‘goose step’. Tries were traded and hands shaken at the end of what was a great festival day.

Proudly, the scorpions were also commended by coaches and refs for displaying the TREDS values and for their outstanding sportsmanship to all the teams they played.

Many thanks to all the parents and supporters that made the trip and helped to cheer the team on.
