Vorarlberg 0 – 19 Regensburg
Team Line-Up and Changes
Vorarlberg made six changes from the previous week’s line-up due to illness and availability issues, with a few last-minute adjustments. Giacomo Caldana returned at 7, while Gregorio Grassi made his debut on the wing, stepping in for the injured Christina Peter. With Patrick Sinner unavailable, the Italian triple threat will have to wait another week. Tom Wright filled in for Antonio Jardim, who was on holiday, and the forward rotation saw Peter Gauper and Hans Tschohl starting.
Match Summary
From the outset, Regensburg’s pack showed their intent to dominate with aggressive forward running. Vorarlberg's defence stood resilient, repeatedly stopping Regensburg's attempts on the gain line. However, after several relentless phases, Regensburg's winger found a gap and scored, setting the tone for a challenging 80 minutes.
Vorarlberg worked hard defensively, but Regensburg capitalised on small openings, scoring twice more – once at the 20-minute mark and once near the end. Vorarlberg struggled with possession, unable to establish sustained attacking momentum. Additionally, we played 15–20 minutes with a man down: ten minutes from a yellow card issued to Críostóir Horan for a late tackle and additional time late in the game when an injury occurred after all substitutions had been exhausted. Regensburg took advantage during these periods, scoring their second and third tries.
While Vorarlberg showed glimpses of offensive potential, key aspects like final offloads and clean ball presentation need improvement to convert pressure into points.
Standout Performances
Despite the loss, the match provided a promising debut for Gregorio Grassi, who we hope will slot into the back row in future games where he may feel more comfortable. Tomás Correa continued to show his threat with ball in hand, while Barney Caven, a seasoned veteran, gave a formidable defensive performance. Although handling was difficult at times, our set pieces – both scrums and lineouts – held up well against a large and organized Regensburg side.
Final Thoughts and Next Match
The match was an enjoyable experience played in good spirits and officiated well. Thanks to Regensburg for making the journey – we look forward to the return fixture in the new year.
Our next match will be an away game at Kempten on 9th November, with a slightly earlier kickoff at 14:00.
