Wadebridge Camels 70th!
Camels Chairman Martin Bricknell writes....
What a day we had last Saturday. Many ex players came along to the Club to help us celebrate the 70th anniversary of Camels first ever match. It was a fantastic chance to catch up with ex team mates, have a beer or three, remember incredible tries that we all scored !! and generally reminisce about the good old days.
That original game, against The Joint Services School of Linguists who were based in Bodmin, took place at Bodieve courtesy of landowner Nancy Phillips on 10th March 1955. From such beginnings - playing on a field recently vacated by a heard of cows, a small shed as changing rooms and a singe galvanised tub with a hose dispensing cold water to what we have at the Molesworth Field today.
Over the years hundreds of players have worn the Camels shirt and the Club has always been immensely proud of those who have progressed to play for more senior sides, to play for Cornwall and to play for England.
Many, many volunteers have, over the years worked incredibly hard to push this Club forward. We started with just one team (at times we hardly had enough for that) and now we run 2 senior teams and a colts team. We have a very large Junior Section, two girls teams (just) and a Woman’s section who coincidentally had their first game on Sunday.
Let's hope that the next 70 years will be even more successful.
