Battle at Bannockburn: Bannockburn RFC 10 - 17 Waid Academy FP RFC

John Murray24 Jan 2012 - 10:35

Waid FPs emerged victorious from their annual battle at Bannockburn. Report by Eric Anderson.

With the main pitch at Bannockburn unavailable due to damaged posts, Waid were forced to use the facilities and play at nearby Wallace High School pitches. Set against the backdrop of the Wallace Monument, the scene was set for a momentous clash. The weather had its part to play with a fierce and biting wind providing a huge advantage to the team playing with it.

Waid started with vice-captain Craig Stevenson in charge for the day and Waid gave first league starts to Rory Doak in the front row and Alan Corstorphine at second row, with Kevin Anderson and Fergus Middleton providing cover amongst the substitutes. Stevenson lost the toss and Bannockburn took the strong wind advantage for the first half. Waid started well and controlled the initial phases through their strong forward pack. A crooked lineout and a blatant block in the centre were both missed by the referee who allowed play to continue. Bannockburn used the extra man well to exploit the space and score in the corner. The conversion was missed and Waid trailed 5-0.

Waid got back in the game after some inspired play by their pacy backs. Centre Mark McKenzie set off on a blistering run, ripping apart the home defence, a clever offload saw Kato Blockley power on and pass to the supporting Kieran Doak who burst clear, side-stepped his man and scored under the posts. Adam Shaw converted to put Waid ahead.

Bannockburn got themselves back in front when full-back Steven Denny failed to clear a long kick. He was caught in possession and turned over. This gave the home side a platform to attack and they ran a move down the left with a grubber kick through. Mark McKenzie looked to have beaten his man for pace and kicked the ball dead however the referee awarded the try to the home side. This award would not have been made with a modern day video ref, however Waid had no option but to dust themselves down and get back to playing rugby. They responded well with more good work by the pack with Gary McLaggan and Duncan Fraser bursting holes in the home defence to push into the 22. This pressure led to a lineout and a driving maul and the visitors were unlucky to go into the break behind when Rory Doak was judged to have been held up from a penalty on the 5 metre line.

Waid started the second half 10-7 behind but with a massive wind advantage behind them. It took Waid a a few minutes to continue where they left off in the first half, but some surging running from the back row of Adam Shaw, Eric Anderson and Graham Gourlay and centres Allan Drysdale and Mark McKenzie put Waid on the front foot. Clever tactical kicking from Paul Hanlon ensured the home side had no escape. The pressure started to mount and Adam Shaw took a quick tap penalty and burst through the bedraggled defence to score. He converted to move Waid 14-10 ahead.

Conditions worsened as the game progressed with driving rain and sleet truly testing the staying power of all but the most ardent of spectators and the game became a war of attrition up front with limited opportunity for Waid to move the ball wide and utilise their backs. Paul Hanlon slotted a late penalty to put Waid seven points clear. This was to be the last score of the game and give Waid the win they had set out to achieve.

Afterwards Craig Stevenson said, "This was a great win for us today. Any win away from home is not to be dismissed and it is what we came here to achieve. The conditions restricted our chance to get a bonus point but it is never easy against Bannockburn. They played well and gave us a real test."

Elsewhere in the league Stobswell ended their league campaign with a bonus point victory over Crieff to finish. Waid now sit six points behind the Dundee side with three games left to overhaul this deficit. With a home fixture to basement side Crieff and away games against Arbroath and Bridgehaugh to follow, Waid are confident of finishing the season strongly and securing the runners-up spot.

Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm.
