Waid Academy FP RFC 30-0 Bannockburn RFC

Waid Academy FP RFC 30-0 Bannockburn RFC

John Murray24 Oct 2011 - 09:47

Waid emerged victorious from their battle with 3rd placed Bannockburn to consolidate their position within Caledonia League 3 and move to within two points of league leaders Panmure.

Eric Anderson reports;

Waid went into the game knowing that defeat would have cost them 2nd place in the league given their visitors recent run of good form. Waid had a full squad to select from and Captain Kevin Anderson was able to blend a mixture of youth and experience to find the winning formula.

Waid had a large home support cheering them on and had the better of the opening exchanges. Skipper Anderson was in imperious form being dominant in the lineout and wreaking havoc for his opposite number in the scrums, winning scrums against the head with alarming regularity for the visitors. This provided the perfect platform for Waid to move into opposition territory and after several phases of play, Waid scored their first try. The forwards battered their way into the 22 and quick ball was played through the backs to release Waid centre Richard Bach who ran outside his man to score the try. Paul Lindsay pulled the conversion wide but Waid held a 5-0 lead, which was thoroughly deserved.

Linsday made amends with a penalty from in front of the posts when Bannockburn went off their feet at the breakdown. Waid number 8 Eric Anderson extended the lead with a try after centre Allan Drysdale offloaded and Anderson powered over behind the posts despite a desperate double tackle. Lindsay added the extra 2 points for the conversion to move Waid 15-0 ahead. Lindsay had time to extend the lead to 18 points before half-time with his 2nd penalty after Bannockburn again infringed at the breakdown.

The visitors started the 2nd half strongly and tested Waid's defence with phase after phase of attacking play. Their efforts paid dividends when they eventually broke through the Waid line and the try looked a certainty with only Waid winger John Murray in the way. Murray chopped his man down with a textbook tackle to keep the visitors out and the danger was soon cleared. Bannockburn were reduced to 14 men when their full-back took a cheap-shot punch at Waid flanker Gary McLaggan following a hefty tackle. Waid used the extra man to their advantage and soon found themselves back in their visitors half. First up Iain Brocklebank made a move up the blindside for the try-line but the veteran was caught short of the line. The forwards maintained momentum and created a good attacking platform and quick ball to feed full-back Scott Busby who came into the line and stepped inside one man, then outside another to score his first league try of the season. Lindsay converted the try to put the game safe and move Waid 25-0 ahead. Bannockburn still looked dangerous in attack and continued to batter at Waid, but Waid's defence was on top and in no mood to concede any points or ground.

Waid collected the try-scoring bonus point when Gary McLaggan rounded off a fine attacking move from quick tap penalties in the dying minutes. Lindsay couldn't convert from wide but Waid were 30-0 ahead and this was to prove the final score. The only down-side to the game on Saturday was the loss of young scrum-half Kieran Doak to injury. Thankfully there appears to be no serious damage to his knee and Doak may be fit again within the month. Man of the match went to Waid number 8 Eric Anderson who was a constant threat in the lineouts and during open play.

After the game Waid Captain Kevin Anderson said, "It was important for us to win today and the bonus point allows us to keep the pressure on Panmure, The forwards won the battle up front and this gave us the chance to dictate the tempo of the game. Our set plays were excellent and we denied them the ball, although when they did test us our defence stood strong."

Next weekend Waid have a break from league business and host Shetland in the National Bowl Competition. Due to the visitors travel arrangements, the game will begin at the earlier time of 11am at Waid Park, Anstruther. Training for the FPs continue on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Waid Centre at 7pm.
