Sports take on Corinthians in their 2nd of 4 away matches this month in the Olympian League Division 2. Following on from an opening day defeat to Old Southendian Reserves and Westhamians last weekend, manager Mitch Gleeson will want to try and get his first points on the board today.
It's going to be a tough with Corinthians winning their opening two games, with striker Nathan Dewberry grabbing 5 in his last match against Ryan last weekend. The striker could prove a prominent figure in today's match.
Sports have only faced Corinthians once previously, a 5-2 away defeat in the Senior Cup in September 2018. Manager Mitch Gleeson will be hoping for better fortunes today.
"The simple fact is we were not good enough against Westhamians. Tired legs led to silly mistakes and resulted in throwing away a good lead. This week we are moving back towards full strength and will have the ability to freshen up the squad as players fatigue".
Gleeson continued "we are still missing a few key boys but are definitely stronger than last week. The plan is to remove the mistakes and poor decisions. We were at fault for all but one of the Westhamians goals and if we remove these mistakes we actually defended quite well".
When asked about the threat of Corinthians, Gleeson stated "I think a compact shape and the ability to transition quickly will help us reduce the impact of the inform striker and continue to create chances for ourselves going forward. It’s going to be an extremely tough game but in this league, I can say that week in week out".
