Too many mistakes cost us the game......

Sports Media Manager Rob Lilley spoke to Mitch Gleeson following last weekends defeat to Westhamians......

What were your overall thoughts on the Westhamians defeat?

I was very disappointed with the result as I feel this was a game where we should be claiming points. A really positive start to the game put us on the front foot and created a solid first half performance. Unfortunately too many mistakes let Westhamians back into the game and cost us our first points in the league. We had chances to put the game to bed in the first half and need to me more ruthless if we want to challenge in this league.

You couldn't have got a better start with Zac's goal after just a few minutes. What did you think of his effort?

It was a fantastic goal that set the tone for the whole of the first half. He started the game very brightly and showed his ability from long range. I was most impressed with his desire to press the ball and force the defensive error. Once he regained possession it was an instinctive finish with the outside of the boot that grabbed us the early lead. Overall a brilliant individual effort.

They were a very physical side but their results have been erratic. Did you have a game plan before Zac's goal, and after it?

The game plan was governed by the players we had available. The dreaded last minute summer holidays meant we were missing many players and had to create a plan based on our squad selection. The front three were a real threat for us and the plan was to work the ball into key areas, especially out wide. Zac in particular started the game well and exploited their fullback in wider areas, as was evidenced by his early goal. The game plan did not change after the goal as I feel we were in control and dominating possession. We created many chances in the first half and defensively were coping with the Westhamians attacks. It was just unfortunate that we didn’t have the legs to continue this in the second half.

So you went in at 2-1 up, that must have been pleasing?

It was a confidence boost for the boys to come in at half time leading. However it was what we expected after all of the hard work in the first half. We kept the ball well and really grew into the game. Mo played up top as a single striker and adapted well to the position. He had a few attempts himself and held the ball up well which allowed the other lads to join in and create chances. Overall I was very pleased with the first half performance.

Westhamians came back in the second half to score three unanswered goals. Do you think the lack of subs and rotation of tired legs contributed to this?

The lack of subs and tired legs was definitely the main contributing factor to losing the game. Westhamians made multiple subs in the second half and it completely changed the pace of the game. We struggled to cope with the fast wing play and turned over the ball too easily due to tired mistakes. Fair play to Westhamians who capitalised on this and piled on the pressure. I am gutted as I feel we could have picked up points if the full squad were available.

Westhamians manager, Moises Kalukembi, agreed it was a well contested game. "I knew it would be tough because both teams came into the match with a win in the cup, and off the back of an opening day league defeat".

Despite the scoreline, the game could have turned either way. The same was thought by Kalukembi. "I have nothing but respect for Sports. They showed a lot of desire and even at 3-2 I thought it was anybody's game"

"I'd like to thank Mitchell and the team on how they conducted themselves throughout the match. It was played as it should be".
