Captain Greg and co. settle for fifth place league finish.

Our first team concluded an up-and-down Premier League campaign after collapsing to a 35 run loss at Wirral rivals Birkenhead Park.

Having struggling with the absences of a few key players in recent weeks, the Sey were looking to finish the season on a positive note against a side desperate to preserve their place in the top flight for another year.

Bowling first, the hosts scored a couple of boundaries in the first few overs, before Key bagged his 68th wicket of a marvellous campaign with the dismissal of Jack Dixon.

However, old adversary Mark Rowland took centre stage with the bat alongside new batter Mike Barnes as the runs started to flow. The former survived a couple of chances and proceeded to punish our bowlers with some vicious blows, including the first of five sixes.

The partnership then surpassed fifty and within a few more overs, the hosts had reached three figures in the 23rd over. By this point, Rowland was able to bring up his own half-century while gaining solid support from Barnes with a few fours of his own.

A dominant stand of 111 finally came to an end in the 26th over as Barnes (43) found himself caught at third man by Ryan off the bowling of Lloyd.

Despite that breakthrough, the Sey continued to be punished by Rowland, now joined in the middle by fellow ex-New Brighton teammate Andrew Clarke.

The pair quickly accelerated the Park innings, with a destructive 45 runs (including three sixes) coming off just four overs as another fifty partnership was reached in just 44 balls.

Rowland eventually amassed his third career century against the Sey with a single, to the delight of his teammates and supporters.

Shortly after, Park were able to reach the 200 run mark via a fifth maximum from Rowland before captain Steve Hird opted to declare early with his side finishing on a strong total of 206 for 2.

Rowland himself concluded a superb knock of 107 not out off 104 balls, while Clarke also contributed well with an unbeaten 31 off just 22 balls.

In reply, the Sey were looking to take advantage of their innings, especially with the prospect of sixty or more overs on offer.

Greg and Connor made a terrific start with a flow of boundaries as well as some good running between the wickets to keep the hosts at bay.

Two fours in three deliveries from Greg brought the partnership to fifty, only to then see his batting partner fall to a stumping by Hird off the bowling of Sri Lankan pro Malinda Pushpakumara.

However, Greg and new batter Stephen anchored our innings well with another exceptional stand of 42 that left Park's bowlers frustrated for the next sixteen overs.

The Sey skipper looked in fine nick with some lovely shots, while Stephen also came into his own with a handy 23. Once again, Clarke intervened for the hosts by bagging the wicket of Stephen to help rejuvenate his side.

Greg eventually reached a deserving half-century off 90 balls and followed that up with two sixes in successive overs to put his side in a strong position.

New batter Evan also dug in at the crease with a number of singles in another fruitful stand of 41 that brought an air of uneasiness for the Park faithful.

The hosts turned back to Pushpakumara to try and make a difference, and were soon rewarded as the left-armer claimed the key LBW scalp of Greg for a brilliant 76.

As the dark clouds started to gather, the Sey were still in a position to try and chase their target despite the loss of their captain. However, the dismissal of Evan brought another blow and enabled Park to celebrate another crucial wicket.

Persistent rain then threatened to complicate matters, though the decision to bring on Thomas Foster proved a masterstroke for the hosts. The former skipper picked up the next three wickets, including two in two balls, to turn the game back in his side's favour.

Our fragile batting line-up then endured further misery as Pushpakumara claimed a further two scalps, including that of Ashy, to bring up a sublime five-wicket haul.

One over later, Park persevered as Dixon threw the ball to Hird from cover to run out Key and allow the hosts to celebrate a gritty 35 run that assures them of Premier League survival for another season.

For the Sey, they finished their campaign as the highest ranked Wirral club in the Liverpool Comp with a fifth place position that includes ten wins and ten losses.

1st XI POTM: Greg Beaver

On the batting front, Greg topped our league run tally with 441 while Rui and Key ended up as two of the league's top seven leading wicket-takers with 60 and 57 respectively.
