Manager delighted with team spirit

JULIE JONES25 Sep - 14:05

Ian Long interview post Shepshed Dynamo (A). By Tom Bowen.

Manager Ian Long praised the spirit and confidence in his side following a dominant victory over Shepshed Dynamo on Tuesday night.

The Wood are still unbeaten in the league, and despite being thrown off by the opposition signing seven new players before yesterday’s game, Long still felt that his side were able to drum up a convincing performance.

He said: “It’s good to keep the run going. Still unbeaten in the league after eight games and if somebody had offered me that at the start of the season I’d have taken it.

“It was made difficult by them signing seven players in the last 24 hours. We had them watched and got a report on them, but that sort of threw it out the window a little bit and we were a little bit unsure about what they were going to go with. We scored pretty early and did dominate long periods of the game and it all worked out fine in the end.”

Kaiman Anderson grabbed his second brace of the season on Tuesday, leaving his mark as the joint-top goalscorer in the league.

Long said: “He’s done well. He’s got better and better as the season’s progressed. His goals are stacking up so that’s pleasing and I think he’s joint-leading goalscorer at the moment with eight in eight in the league. It’s an excellent return from him and I think he probably could’ve had a few more in all honesty, but he’s doing really well and I think he’s getting better with every game that goes by.

"I suppose that comes with the fact that he’s getting used to playing with the lads around him and it’s starting to gel together and come together quite nicely at the moment.”

“We’re quite confident now and have been on a good run. Performances have been good and we’re playing some good football and attractive football. I read the Shepshed match report today and that was really complimentary of the side which was a nice touch from them. As for team spirit, wins help, for sure.

“That seems to be really building as well and there’s a good atmosphere to the group. There are a lot of lads who didn’t know each other and never played with each other at the start of the season, but the wins help and the spirit certainly seems to be coming together.”

Wood are back to home comforts on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Long Eaton United to the John Sylvester Stadium.

They are unbeaten since the opening day, sitting in fifth place in the table.

“They’ve also got the joint-leading goalscorer in their ranks. They’re a good side by all accounts [and] it’ll be a tough game. Our fixtures get quite tough over the next month. We play some of the sides that you’d expect to be up the top end of the table in Anstey, Quorn and Long Eaton. It’ll be interesting to see how we go against some of the better sides in the league and I’m quite looking forward to that.”
