Great all round display from Warton

On a beautiful day at Milnthorpe visiting skipper Finney won the toss and inserted Milnthorpe. Warton's opening bowlers Crowther and Brown (as they have done all season) bowled with good intensity and pace, the wicket was helping the bowlers for the first hour of play and Warton certainly made the most of it. Milnthorpe were reduced to 0-2 and failed to score a run for nearly 6 overs. Wickets continued to tumble and catches were being held which was very pleasing after last weeks display in the field. Crowther in particular was lively, forcing Phil Bovis off the field with a suspected broken finger, even the experienced Bovis was struggling to cope with this fine bowling display and Ricky Nelson promptly removed his bat and gloves from the field which earned a 'telling off'from the umpire.
Milnthorpe began to pass the hundred mark but both Ricky and Ryan chipped in with wickets late on to bowl out Milnthorpe for 118, a competitive total after looking like Milnthorpe would be dismissed for less than 80. Warton can be well pleased though with a much improved fielding display in the heat and to bowl out a side was pleasing for the skipper.
In reply Thissy and Ryan once again looked solid with a mixture of resolute batting and lovely strokeplay, showing Milnthorpe what was required on this wicket. Warton passed 50 without loss until Ryan was dismissed for an excellent 42 and then Thissy was caught as Warton began to wobble slightly. Warton did not need to worry though as Stuart Mayor (as he did at Silverdale) did what he does best and scored a quickfire 38 not out, a mixture of unorthodox strokes and excellent pull shots to the boundary. Dan Dixon played his part too and somehow launched a maximum to the boundary, the lads are still unsure how he managed this but the short boundary may provide the answer to this question! So an excellent 8 wicket success, won at a canter in the end against a team who should be challeging in the top four come the end of the season.
The lads celebrated a great day for the club with cheap champagne in the dressing room to celebrate Gster's birthday, and the usual frolics in the showers, for some reason Finney was subjected to the bullying this week as his shower gel partners Brown, Nelson and Growther completed disrespected the skipper!!At least someone else will be the target next week. Another plus point is the fines kitty, £30 collected yesterday to add to the last day party planned celebrations.
Finally a comment about the support yesterday at Milnthorpe, it was really appreciated by the lads and it was great to see so many Warton supporters at the club, glad we did them proud!
