Rugby League veterans urged to make Masters comeback

Rugby League veterans urged to make Masters comeback

Martin Brough27 May 2011 - 21:01

Veteran ex-players are being urged to return to rugby and give the Masters game a try.

The concept, which originated in Australia, caters for Over-35s and is gaining popularity in Cumbria, with a West versus South clash held at Arlecdon earlier this month.

“People drop out of rugby league because of the physical demands of the game as they get older,” said Dave Farrell, who is turning out for his club Wath Brow Hornets in Masters rugby.

“Masters recognises that fact and the rules are modified so the physical side of the game is controlled and reduced to a large extent.

“It started in this country in 2008 and in Cumbria, in earnest, last year, and it’s on an upward trend. There’s scope for people in their 40s and 50s to come along and give it a go.

“So far players from Wath Brow, Frizington, Seaton and Egremont have got on board, but that leaves a lot of clubs who are yet to respond.

“Even if they can’t raise a team players are still invited to come along and join in. It is played purely for enjoyment and the social side.”

Ex-Great Britain international Hugh Waddell turned out for West Cumbria at Arlecdon.

League for All officer Matt Jefferson said: “‘Hugh seemed to really enjoy the afternoon. He even put on a jersey for the South in the second half of the game. He is such a well-known player in Cumbria and all of the guys seemed to really enjoy playing alongside and against him.”

The Masters will now take a short summer break and be replaced with a six-week 35+ social touch event to give players a chance to stay get fit.
