Wellington Colts: Looking backwards – Looking Forwards
The 2019 – 2020 season was always going to be a tough one for Wellington RFC Colts. The step up from Under 16s is never easy for junior Colts, who are faced with meeting players already 18 years old. Wellington only had a handful of senior Colts left from the previous year’s successful side and the squad was further depleted by players called up for County, Academy and other school competitions.
A core of twelve players were left, supported each game by the two or three others that could make that week. It was against this tough background that Wellington’s Colts entered the Somerset League and Cup competitions, with various friendlies to start the season off. A good start saw some close friendly games against local rivals, with our Colts holding their own against some bigger and more powerful squads.
Despite best efforts, the Somerset League proved to be a disappointment, largely due to factors outside the team’s control. Many local clubs struggled to raise teams and a number of matches were called off. This was made worse by the poor weather causing the postponement of other games. However, when the team did get chance to play, there was some great rugby and excellent performances. A highlight was the away game at Frampton Cotterell. Wellington were well beaten but competed to the last and had the best after match of the year. It was a great reminder that rugby isn’t just about the 80 minutes on the pitch!
The Somerset Cup proved much more rewarding and saw great wins against Ivel Barbarians and Weston Hornets. Wellington Colts nearly went all the way and only lost very narrowly in the semi-finals to local rivals Wiveliscombe. Another time and it might have been a different story.
As for every other team, the season was sadly cut short. End of season celebrations weren’t possible but there were still many positives to recognise from the season. The commitment of the core players to turn up to training, week in, week out, was fantastic. They have ensured we have a Colts team for the next season and have provided the foundations of an exciting team. All of them would have been the coaches’ players of the season. Loui Justice also stepped up to be a strong captain and has the makings of a leading senior player for Wellington.
Looking forward, the Colts for 2020 -2021 now have an experienced group of senior players. These will be joined by an exciting group of junior Colts, who have already shown they are more than capable of competing. There will also be new players that come along and add depth and talent to the squad. For any players that are interested, look out for the Wellington Colts 2020 – 2021 Face Book page and the training sessions. All are welcome to join a great group of talented guys.
