There was another good crowd at Welwyn as they held a pre-match lunch to thank Volunteers and Vice Presidents for their involvement in the club. The firm ground suited Welwyn who had a quick set of backs out for their penultimate league game against Hitchin. Welwyn also had a strong pack and were able to put Hitchin under pressure from the very start of the game.
Early pressure saw Welwyn moving the ball across their back line eventually giving Salanabuka the space to go round his opposite number and score in the corner. The kick was converted as Welwyn took an early lead. Welwyn’s scrum was dominant throughout and they won a penalty in their own half which they tapped and took quickly. Milton started the move and passed to Kemp who set Kawea on his way. Kawea passed to Salanabuka who rounded his man and, as he was tackled, passed the ball inside to Scofield who was able to run in under the posts for the second try which Kemp duly converted. Hitchin were not going to give up though and they attacked the Welwyn line. As they tried to get the ball out to their winger, Salanabuka was deemed to have deliberately knocked the ball forward and was shown a yellow card. Welwyn managed to prevent Hitchin from scoring during the yellow card but after the ten minutes were up, Hitchin managed to crash through to score. The kick was good but Welwyn responded well and won a penalty just outside the Hitchin 22. They took a scrum and, as play broke up, Kemp sidestepped a couple of Hitchin players and put Salanabuka away for his second try, which Kemp then duly converted.
Play resumed and Hitchin conceded another penalty and Welwyn again took a quick tap passing the ball along the line to give Salanabuka the space to round his opposite number and go over for his third try which Kemp converted. As we reached the end of the first half Hitchin attacked and managed to create an overlap from which Phil Ryan scored in the corner. Half time was reached with Welwyn leading 28-12.
The second half saw Hitchin putting up a stronger fight and they spent a lot of time in the Welwyn half but were unable to score. Eventually Welwyn won a penalty that they were able to kick into the corner. From the resulting lineout Kemp released Emery, who was playing his 100th game for the team, and he passed to Walkey who scored in the corner. Kemp's kicking had been excellent during the game and he slotted the conversion again. The game continued to be played in the middle of the pitch and Hitchin had two yellow cards during the half which reduced their ability to attack. Welwyn, though, continued to look for opportunities and towards the end of the game, Laing placed a delicate kick into the corner of the Hitchin dead ball area and Salanabuka managed to get past his defender to touch down for his fourth try. The conversion was missed but Welwyn had a valuable 40-12 win which takes them above Hitchin in the league.
Welwyn's last league game of the season is in two weeks’ time away to Fullerians.
