Colts lose out to strong visiting Letchworth side

Jonathan Cirkel8 Oct 2024 - 19:52

A good game of rugby, but found a nervy start hard to come back from

Sunday 6th Oct - Letchworth visit Hobbs Way

Letchworth struck first after 8 mins with an unconverted try in the corner, followed by a second from an interception during a promising Welwyn attack. Play continued with both teams attacking well but thwarted by the opposition defence. Letchworth’s kick chase worked well allowing them to win the territory game and continually apply pressure to Welwyn.

At 35mins Letchworth won a tighthead and moved the ball out to the wing making great progress well into Welwyn half, but a full width of the pitch tackle by Alfie Temple saved a certain try. 5 mins later however, and a penalty to Letchworth lead to a strong attack with only defiant defence from Welwyn denying a try.

Welwyn responded from a lineout with Phillip Bentowski breaking through a gap, beating 3 defenders and making 50m with support from Micah and George to bring play within 20m of the Letchworth line. Unfortunately, time ran out before this position could be progressed.

The second half showed an improvement in Welwyn play however, Letchworth won the ball from a lineout and ran the length of the field to score a try (15-0). Further strong defence around the Welwyn 10m line kept Letchworth out for a long time, but the visitors eventually break through for second try of the half (20-0).

A strong tackle by Davies Foster, thwarted another solid Letchworth attack down the wing resulting in a lineout won by Welwyn. From a well worked backs move, Micah Sutherland made another storming run through the opposition, but was tackled on the 10m line. Letchworth cleared their lines and the resulting Welwyn lineout was declared not straight.

Welwyn won another tighthead scrum and the ball was moved out to Luca Barron who ran 30m down the wing toward the Letchworth try line before being tackled into touch.

Welwyn continued to attack with Harrison Meredith breaking off the back of the scrum passing to Ross who side-stepped his way through several tackles towards the posts and passed to Ben Burrows for an excellent team try under the posts. Try converted by Ross 20-7.

Despite determined defence by Welwyn, sustained pressure by Letchworth resulted in two more Letchworth tries taking the score to 32-7.

Welwyn showed great character by continuing to attack with purpose as a team with further strong runs Filip Bentowski, Ross Haydon and Micah Sutherland almost breaking through for a try. However, turnover ball allowed Letchworth a final length of the field breakaway try to end the game at 37-7 to Letchworth.

Welwyn performed well in the scrums and showed good improvement since the last game. A good effort overall against a strong Letchworth team.

MOM: Micah Sutherland
