Westbury Ladies kicked off the local Derby, with Melksham Ladies being the closest away game for the Westbury team to travel to. Melksham went straight on the attack and took advantage of the opposition getting bunched up in defence. They went over the whitewash to score and convert their first try of the day making the score 7 0.
It wasn’t long before Melksham were crossing the line again as they took advantage of Westbury Ladies less experienced side. The try went unconverted. 12 0.
A lapse in concentration by the homes side saw Westbury Ladies sneak round the outside and score their first try of the day by Denny Jones, who was on loan from Devizes Ladies. The try was unconverted by Lana Plummer. This brought the score to 12 5.
Westbury Ladies confidence was building with some big tackles being put in by the ladies and balls being stolen at the ruck by Maddie Bias and try scorer, Denny Jones.
The second half of the first half saw Westbury Ladies pushing the opposition back into their half slowly, but it wasn’t enough to stop them and further three try’s were scored before the 35 minutes were up, two were converted. The score at half time was 31 5.
The second half saw some really exciting passages of play and saw Melksham held back from the Westbury Ladies 22 for long periods of time. The lack of time with the ball and the constant defending saw the Westbury Ladies begin to tire. Melksham Ladies went on to score 6 trys which were unconverted in the second half.
Westbury Ladies were determined to get one more lady across the whitewash before the whistle was blown. After a long kick off Westbury Ladies managed to pin Melksham down in their half and after some nice off loading they saw Kelly Latham dot down over the line with Denny Jones converting. This made the final score 63 12.
The game saw 14 scrums and seven lineouts.
Thanks to Devizes Ladies for loaning us two players for the game.
Congratulations for the forward of the match Maddie Bias and back of the match Jodie Bartlett.
