South Shields Westoe v's Medicals Match Report

Janette Moffett1 Feb 2020 - 18:23

Discipline Pays Off

South Shields Westoe hosted Medicals for the return fixture, hoping to right some wrongs from when playing away losing 35-31
The wind died down, as the match kicked off, a dominant start from the home team, led us to believe a reversal of fortunes was possible. A section of good interplay from the backs saw Luke Moffett touch down for his first of the day, which he converted 7-0.
Immediately after re- starting, Medicals were on the attack, they intercepted a pass and ran with it scoring within two minutes from the kick, converted 7-7
An excellent game of rugby was being played, with both teams showing great skills, and commitment.
Medicals dominated the play in the next few phases, showing clever ball skills, and teamwork, resulting in another try, unconverted 7-12
Westoe now on the back foot, had work to do, a break though came in the form of a ruck, where Sam Gaff picked up the ball from the back, and ran with it to score, converted giving a half time score of 14-12
Westoe came back in the second half eager to play more direct rugby, which paid off. The dominant front row showed quality resulting in a Raymie Elliot try from a pick and go, converted by Moffett 21-12
Great hands from the forwards and clever interplay, found the ball in the formidable Paul Evans hands, who did what he does best, dummied a couple of the away team to score, again converted 28-12
A succession of scrums and line outs followed, with Westoe domineering the play, not losing any momentum, which has happened in previous matches. We were playing formidable rugby, ensuring discipline was maintained and not making schoolboy errors, which has sometimes cost us points.
Because discipline was maintained, the points on the board started to reflect the commitment of the players. Moffett scored his second and third of the day both which he converted 42-12, next was a well worked move in the Medicals 22 resulting in a John Younghusband try, converted 49-12.
The Romford Rocket Matt Rannigan set up the next try , much to the delight of his visiting friends and family from down south, a quailty pass to Jason Payne enabled him to cross the line - converted 56-12.
And finally the stand out try of the day came from a cross field kick into the safe hands of winger Ben Roberts, who scored after a 40 metre run, the last kick of the game was a missed conversion, however 8 out of 9 is not to be sniffed at.
Final Score 61-12

Westoe 2nd XV played away to Medicals , they started slow as Medicals turned over a scrum on the Westoe 5m line leading to the first score in the opening few minutes minutes. With 5 minutes to go the score was 17-17, a last minute try from Westoe led to them coming away with as 17-24 win.

The Senators game on Friday night was a close encounter ending 14-5 to Hartlepool who continue on their cup run.
