With the recent draw for the first round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup both London sides managed to secure first round fixtures at home.
The London Chargers have drawn Welsh Champions Bridgend Blue Bulls whilst the Wests Warriors have drawn the Great Britain Police Rugby League. Both of these teams present interesting challenges and an opportunity for both sides to progress with some committed and determined effort.
Thanks to the work of the London Broncos and London Skolars the clubs will all partake in a triple header at Skolars home ground on Saturday the 28th of January. The RFL and all clubs involved have worked hard to create an event that showcases the depth of rugby league talent in London.
This year 4 sides from 4 divisions will partake in the Challenge Cup. That London has so many teams from a range of grades qualified for the Cup speaks volumes of the work being done outside the heartlands.
The Chargers will kick off their 2017 Cup campaign at 1pm, speaking of the arrangement, Cam Paul from London Chargers said:
“The Challenge Cup is a special competition and for us to able to play our first round game before the Skolars v Broncos ‘London Clash’ at a great facility make it even more special. It will be great for London RL fans to be able to support us all in one location.”
London Skolars General Manager Jac Davies said:
“This arrangement is good for everybody associated with London rugby league, greater co-operation like this can only lead to greater interest and growth in the sport in the Capital. We’re delighted here at New River and we’re hoping for a real festival of London rugby league.”
Speaking on behalf of the Wests Warrios, head coach Kim Parkinson claims "this event is a chance to showcase the growth of League in London. There is a lot of clubs down south from a range of competitions and we are out to show the Rugby League community what we can bring to the game."
The schedule for day is:
1130: Gates Open
1300: London Chargers vs Bridgend Blue Bulls
1500: London Skolars vs London Broncos
1700: Wests Warriors vs Great Britain Police Rugby League
We look forward to welcoming fans from the Warriors family as well as the wider rugby league community in London along to what will be an historic day in the capital. Let's show the game that we are #initforlondon.
